Your parent and you are on the same team – there are so many things going on in your parent's life that they aren’t able to control their emotions. When your performance doesn’t meet the parent’s expectation that’s when they lose their cool. Remember it is not your fault. Competitive sport is difficult, some days you will play well and some days you won’t. Even though it is upsetting try to keep your cool on the bad days. Try not fight with your parent, that will make it worse. Even if they are shouting at you, there is no point arguing with them at that point of time. Choose a time when both you and your parents are calm to discuss about the session. Avoid conversing right after the match or the ride back home. In my 15 years of playing competitive tennis, these are few techniques which has really helped me and my students to handle the pressure. Some techniques which can help you to deal with the pressure -

1. Emotional Control – sometimes the pressure can be overwhelming. There are several meditation techniques which will help you control your emotions and stay calm.

2. Work on your thought process – try to change the way you think, after all your performance depends on your actions. How you pick up the positives and avoid the negatives is all up to you.

3. Self -Talk – Keep talking to yourself. You are stronger than you think. Your mental toughness lies in your self -talk, the inner talk which tells you to get up and keep fighting.

4. Empty your mind – emptying your mind will help you get rid of unwanted thoughts or spiraling thoughts. This will help you regulate your emotions better.

5. Breathing techniques – When you feel the pressure, certain breathing techniques can calm your nervous system. This changes the vibration of the body and in turn can relax you down. Learn and practice the breathing techniques to make use of them when you need it.
